Do your career ambitions affect your personal life in unwanted ways? Is your pursuit to be a high-achiever at your workplace taking a toll on your personal life? You need to find effective ways to weave together the different aspects of your lives to achieve work-life harmony. This approach produces a greater sense of satisfaction in your life and also enhances your well-being.

The modern-day work environment, competitive global economy, and technological advancements are now allowing us to work 24/7 while making it increasingly more difficult to achieve balance with our personal lives. I have witnessed workloads and deadlines are so fierce that even a slight distraction may risk you losing your footing and falling into chaos. Creating a balance and achieving harmony between work and personal life have become a necessity.

Importance of Work-Life Balance

It’s crucial that you find the work-life balance that you enjoy and can sustain for long. Keeping it effective yet simple while being not hard on yourself helps you gain many advantages. Some of the remarkable benefits of maintaining a balanced lifestyle are :

● Reduces stress

● Improves your mood

● Increased productivity

● Helps to avoid burnout

● Helps to boost your energy

● Improves your mental state of mind

● Improves general health and well-being

7 Brilliant Strategies to Attain Work-Life Harmony

Work and personal life are both crucial parts of our lives. It isn’t always easy to separate them and it would be more beneficial to create harmony between them instead of pushing one out of the other's territory in the name of achieving “work-life balance”. Follow these 7 powerful strategies, based on my personal and professional experience, to achieve harmony and a fine balance between your work and personal life.

1. Make Conscious Decisions

Ensure you make strategic choices about the tasks and goals you have to accomplish and what is important to you. Make conscious decisions about how much you are going to work on them and how you are going to spend the rest of your time. Always have a plan about what you spend your time on.

2. Stay Active and Get Rest

Your professional responsibilities may be quite demanding in terms of time and energy but you need to do an optimal amount of physical activity and get sufficient rest in tandem. Incorporate exercises and physical activities like walking, brisking or biking to work in your daily life. Also, get enough sleep for better focus, creativity and mental state.

3. Manage Your Time Smartly

Time is the major factor that can make or mar your efforts to create a sustainable harmony between work and personal life. Evaluate how much time you are spending to accomplish various tasks and plan your schedule accordingly. Use effective time management techniques, focus on the tasks you excel and delegate to others to gain a sense of satisfaction with your life.

4. Seek and Work on Passion

Determine your passions and if possible, work in a field that you find yourself passionate about. A study published in The Annals of Behavioral Medicine in 2015 suggests that we are less stressed and more invested in our work while pursuing our passion. According to my experience, once you gain clarity on your passion-based objectives, you begin to anchor yourself in a nourishing environment that gives your life a sense of purpose and fulfilment.

5. Don’t Let Setbacks Overwhelm You

Success and setbacks are a part of our lives. As per my experience, how you deal and learn from unprecedented challenges has a significant role in achieving a fine work-life balance. Stay optimistic and resilient towards limitations to control your life. Instead of getting overwhelmed with obstacles, refocus your energy and take necessary actions to bring harmony back in adverse situations.

6. Accept Your Limits and Learn to Say No

If you are overwhelmed with professional responsibilities and are asked to take on new tasks, don’t hesitate to convey your concerns and say no to your team and manager. You can't accomplish everything by yourself, it’s fine to seek help from others. Whenever you feel over-occupied, focus on your strengths, prioritise urgent tasks for yourself and deny or delegate less important responsibilities.

7. Create and Follow a Roadmap of Life

Use your career as an instrument to build your future, and develop a life plan or roadmap to dreams to get what you desire. It could even involve taking a step back from your current career to recalibrate your time and energy. This approach will help you execute a roadmap of life and build sustainable work-life harmony.

If you don’t have a healthy work-life balance or work-life harmony, transform your life to achieve a state where your professional and personal lives can coexist without fear of losing balance. Integrating the right strategies in your pursuit of 'work-life balance' will not only improve your mental well-being, it can improve your physical health as well.
